When thinking about human trafficking, the cruel activity of shipping Africans to America for slavery comes to mind. In today’s world, the term slavery is no longer formally used to describe people in forced labor and subjected to other exploits including of the sexual kind. Even though there is no formal and legal slave trade in the 20th and 21st century, trafficking in human beings for similar purposes that constitutes slavery still exists; ironically, in much greater numbers.
Estimates by international experts reveal a scary reality of the world today: 200 million people are victims of human trafficking in the 20th century alone as compared to 12 million people who were brought from Africa to America as slaves from the 1500s to the 1900s. Many of the today’s victims of human trafficking, be it males, females, and children are treated no better than the African slaves of the bygone era. Slavery of the 21st century is perpetrated by organized crimes with the activity bestowing upon them annual proceeds of 7 to 10 billion US dollars; third in rank after narcotic drugs and weapons – certainly a very serious challenge faced by the international community today.
