Strength of Materials Video 3: Analysis of Stress 2

This is the third video in the Strength of Materials series; Analysis of Stress 2. Explained in this video are Concept of Shear and Bearing Stress, Computation of Stress on an Arbitrary Plane, Concept of Principle Stress and Principal Plane, and Concept of Stress Variants. Reminded in this video is a review of Normal stress. Solution to the exercises of the previous video as well as a new exercise is provided. This video lecture was presented by Professor S.K. Bhattacharyya from Department of Civil Engineering, I.I.T, Kharagpur, India, made available by the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning, a joint venture by Indian institutes of technology & Indian institutes of science. Bang! Another Dead – "Just Doing My Job"

I don't believe in killing human beings at all. Accidentally killing an attacker in self defense is something, as any decent law states, might not be blamed on the defender. Furthermore, I think killing is not right even when it is a soldier's duty to carry out orders a.k.a 'just doing his/her job'. What hogwash! Thus, such a soldier that has done so has lost his/her humanity although it might still be recoverable. A soldier is still a human being, with a good mind to know what is right and what is wrong and decide for one's self; not a shell of a human (a killing machine) that blindly follows orders to kill. That soldier, wanting to kill again thereafter, I find, is disturbing.

What does the Entire Universe Looks Like?

What does the ultimate end of the cosmos look like? Physicists believe that the galaxy is a 360 degree envelope over matter with the mass creating a gravitational warp in space and ‘time’, attracting matter to some extent towards it. This mathematical model of the physical theory is what helps man to measure distance and size of distant stars. In the past, man had once thought the earth was an upside down world just beyond the horizon. Man’s first photo of earth taken from space finally proved earth’s real shape.

Nonetheless, the theory of earth being an elliptical 3-dimensional mass was made without man having to go to space. Hence, similarly, does man need to go outside the ultimate edge of space in order to see the entire universe’s shape? Does man have to send probes to the very edges of space in order to model the universe’s shape? Maybe the universe looks like similar to any other galaxy. Perhaps outer space can be considered as an extension of this house that we call earth: an infinite cold and dark garden wherein lies new riches and fascinating life forms found underneath an turned over rock.

Super Rich Person Thinks of Buying Gold Bullion Today

Having a few thousand, or maybe a few tens of thousands of dollars right now and not knowing what to do with it is a situation that occurs only to very privileged people. I mean, when was the last time you thought about it? Probably never, right? Well, unless you have thought about it then I really don’t know what you are doing on this blog and reading this blog post. Why don't you go to your billion dollar stables and play with your million-dollar horsey or something?

Since I caught your attention then we may as well ponder on what to do with, say, ten thousand dollars that you might have lying about unused in your home drawer somewhere. The first thing that should come to your mind today is to buy gold bullion. Why? Just look at the gold price charts today, my man! It’s a dip! Buy! Buy! Buy! This is only for today because by being this rich tomorrow you can find something else to do with one of the many ten thousand dollar bundles you have stashed everywhere in your house.

Tatmun the Pharaoh’s Slave Escapes

Everyday he does the same thing, dig sand pits at the pyramids for the pharaoh. Tatmun, like other slaves is fed well with beef from freshly slaughtered cows of the Nile, sweet dates and fresh vegetables from the Delta; better than most low paying jobs in ancient Egypt. Nevertheless, Tatmun wants to live as a free man and not remain in slavery. He yearns the feeling of being free, to do what he wants, when he wants.

After months of planning, he finally decides to flee the slave camps near the pyramids on a moonless night like tonight. He has enough supply of water to survive in the desert for a few days. He also managed to put aside dates, pickled vegetables, and dried beef from his daily rations and hid them in a rock crevice not far away. He knows that he must escape to a land where the Pharaoh’s power has no influence for being caught in Egypt would certainly mean his demise.

The guards are drunk as usual tonight. Their harrowing singing masks the sound of Tatmun’s footsteps as twigs break beneath his feet - a method used to alert the guards of potential escapees. This makes him smile even though he is still fearful so he starts running. In every step of his run the fine desert sand flies up to his feet in clouds of cool tingling sensations. Tatmun looks back over his shoulder. Nobody is coming after him. He feels relieved in mild satisfaction. Tatmun decides to go westward into the land of Carthage, a rival empire to the Pharaoh’s Egypt. There he will start a new life. He will be a free man soon.

The Beauty of Life Remains on Earth

Why was it; the cosmos made, or is still being made so physically vast? Why must it be astonishingly big with only earth, as we know for now, as the only intimately habitable planet? Is it man’s destiny to be confined to only our solar system or is it our destiny to choose to live anywhere we choose in the cosmos? Naturally, earth is man’s home. Earth is also man’s laboratory to learn about humans as a creation and consciously, knowingly, and mindfully bring humans into a better state of progress.

This has to be because it will take humans the ability to live virtually forever to be able to travel to the furthest known section of the cosmos. Even then, man must create a self sustainable ecosystem for life on that journey. Until then, the beauty of life remains on earth as a passing of legacy from one generation to the next. Is man so selfish to want to live forever, never aging, never being sick, never dying a natural death? Perhaps yes but perhaps it also depends on one’s primary reason to want eternal life.
